1. Language as a Journey of Cultural Discovery
At Văn Lang Sài Gòn College (VLSC), the Japanese Studies program is built on a philosophy of holistic education — not only focusing on grammar and vocabulary, but also emphasizing practical application and cultural context.
This approach is reflected through various exchange and experiential activities that deepen students’ understanding of cross-cultural communication and foster cultural sensitivity.
2. Special Cultural Program: “Touching Japan: Yukata & Origami”
Recently, Japanese Studies students participated in a special themed workshop titled “Touching Japan: Yukata & Origami,” with the participation of Ms. Nagase Nanoka, a traditional clothing instructor from Japan.
Designed as an engaging cultural encounter, the event served as a bridge between language and culture, offering students valuable learning experiences:
Yukata Dressing Practice: Students had hands-on experience wearing the traditional Yukata, while learning about the historical and social significance behind each element of the attire — gaining insight into Japanese nonverbal communication and etiquette.

The Art of Origami: Through hands-on Origami practice, students not only enhanced their dexterity but also discovered and experienced the essence of Japanese craftsmanship spirit (shokunin kishitsu) — characterized by precision, patience, and attention to detail.

Cultural Exchange Activities: Interactive mini games and cultural quizzes were integrated throughout the session, helping students review and reinforce their knowledge about Japanese people and culture in a fun and engaging way — fostering an active learning environment.
3. Educational Value and Multicultural Vision
The workshop effectively inspired students’ learning motivation, turning each Japanese language class into a lively and meaningful cultural experience, while nurturing a global and multicultural mindset.

At VLSC, learning a foreign language goes beyond developing linguistic competence — it is a journey of connection, understanding, and expanding one’s global perspective.
Through immersive cultural activities, students are equipped not only with communication skills but also with intercultural competence — a key factor for success in today’s globalized working environment.
